Your First 3D Printer: A Beginner's Guide
New to 3D printing? A plain-English guide to how it works, what actually matters in a first printer, and whether the Bambu Lab A1 Mini is the right place to start.
If you've been curious about 3D printing but weren't sure where to begin, this is written for you — starting from zero. No jargon you don't need, honest about what these machines can and can't do, and a clear path to your first print.
By the end you'll know enough to make one of three decisions: buy a printer, get help choosing one, or simply have something made for you.
What 3D printing actually is
A 3D printer builds a physical object from a digital model, one thin layer at a time.
The common type for homes and small studios is FDM — Fused Deposition Modelling. It melts a plastic string, called filament, and draws each layer until the object is finished. This is what the printer in this guide, the Bambu Lab A1 Mini, does.
The other main type is resin printing, which cures liquid resin with light. It captures finer detail — think tabletop miniatures with crisp faces — but it's messier, needs more setup and ventilation, and isn't where most people start.
You prepare a model for printing with slicer software, which converts a 3D file into instructions the printer follows. On modern machines this is close to one click. A small object might print in under an hour; a detailed one can run overnight. You don't have to watch it.
The honest truth about getting started
Modern beginner printers are genuinely close to "unbox, let it calibrate itself, and print". The A1 Mini runs its own setup routine before each print.
Your first day usually looks like this: assemble a few parts, run the guided setup, load a spool of filament, pick a test model, and press print. Most people have a finished object in an hour or two.
The real learning curve is the week or two after that. You'll learn how to orient a model so it prints cleanly, when a print needs support structures, how to get the first layer to stick, and why a print occasionally fails. This is normal, and it passes quickly.
The honest version: the printer is the easy part. The skill you're actually building is judgement — which models print well, which need small tweaks, and which are better sent to someone with a bigger machine.
Two things worth knowing early:
- You don't need to know 3D modelling to start. You can print models other people have made. If you have an idea but can't model it, AI Create turns a description or an image into a printable file.
- You don't need an expensive machine to learn. A capable printer around the ₹20,000 mark teaches you everything a machine five times the price would.

What actually matters in a first printer
Ignore the spec-sheet arms race for a moment. For a first printer, five things matter:
- Does it calibrate itself? Automatic bed levelling and flow calibration remove the single most common beginner frustration — a first layer that won't stick.
- Can you get help and spares? A printer sold with an invoice, clear warranty terms, and a real person to message is worth more than a slightly cheaper import with no support.
- Build volume versus your projects. How big are the things you actually want to make? Most beginner projects — organisers, brackets, miniatures, phone stands, gifts — fit comfortably in a 180 mm cube. Bigger beds cost more and take more desk space.
- The materials you'll actually use. Almost every beginner only ever needs two: PLA and PETG. Exotic materials need specific hardware.
- Community. A widely-used printer means more tested profiles, more shared models, and more answers when you get stuck.
And a few things that matter less than beginners expect:
- Headline top speed. Real print time depends far more on the model and your quality settings.
- A very large build volume. You rarely use it at first.
- Multi-colour on day one. It's a nice add-on, not a starting requirement.
Filament, in one section
Filament is the plastic the printer melts. Home printers use 1.75 mm filament, usually sold on 1 kg spools.
- PLA — start here. Easy to print, low warp, low odour. Great for models, prototypes, décor and gifts. Not for things that sit in a hot car or take structural load outdoors.
- PETG — the natural next step. Tougher, more heat- and moisture-resistant, good for functional parts. Slightly fussier than PLA.
- Silk PLA — PLA with a shiny, almost metallic finish. As easy as normal PLA; made for display pieces.
- TPU (flexible) and engineering plastics like ABS, ASA, polycarbonate and nylon exist, but they're not where a beginner starts — and some need an enclosed printer.
Print temperatures and speeds come from tested profiles in the slicer, so you're not guessing. Keep spools in a sealed box with desiccant — damp filament prints badly.
Multi-colour printing uses an add-on that swaps between spools automatically. The A1 Mini supports one (AMS Lite), sold separately. You don't need it to start.
LayerHub's own filament — PLA Pro, PETG HS and Silk PLA — is made in India, sold as 1 kg 1.75 mm spools, and print-tested on these machines in the Mumbai studio. If you want one specific recommendation to begin with, a spool of PLA Pro is the standard first buy.
What can you actually make?
A realistic list for a 180 mm build:
- Around the home — organisers, wall hooks, cable clips, drawer dividers, replacement knobs, planters, phone and tablet stands.
- Hobby and gifts — tabletop miniatures and terrain, desk toys, keychains, articulated models, custom nameplates.
- Making and prototyping — jigs and fixtures, enclosures for electronics projects, brackets, and fit-and-form prototypes before you commit to a manufacturer.
- Cosplay and props — smaller props and parts; large props are printed in sections and glued.
The honest ceiling: single parts up to about 18 cm on a side. Bigger objects get split and joined. Jewellery-grade fine detail is really resin territory.

What does it cost to run?
Less than most people expect. After the printer itself, the running costs are a spool of filament and a little electricity.
A 1 kg spool holds a lot of plastic. A phone stand might be 30–40 grams; a palm-sized model, 15–25 grams; a set of drawer organisers, a few hundred. Most single prints use grams, not spools. An FDM printer this size also draws roughly the power of a household appliance while running, not while idle.
There's no ink-cartridge trap here: one open filament brand works across printers, and the A1 Mini's wear parts — mainly the nozzle — are inexpensive and occasional.
Is a beginner printer right for you?
A self-check before we get to the specific machine.
An entry FDM printer is a strong fit if:
- You're new and want to learn without fighting the hardware.
- Your projects fit within roughly 180 mm and you'll mostly print PLA and PETG.
- You want it working on a desk with minimal tinkering.
- You'd rather buy from someone who gives you an invoice, states the warranty terms, and answers on WhatsApp than import a machine with no local support.
Consider something else — or ask us first — if:
- You need to print large single parts regularly. That wants a bigger build volume.
- Your main use is engineering materials — ABS, ASA, polycarbonate, nylon, or carbon- and glass-filled composites. Those want an enclosed printer.
- You need fully enclosed printing for fumes or warp control.
- You specifically need fine miniature detail beyond what FDM does — that's resin.

The Bambu Lab A1 Mini
This is LayerHub's first curated printer: a compact, open-frame FDM machine aimed squarely at people starting out.
What it is, in plain numbers:
- Build volume: 180 × 180 × 180 mm.
- Calibration: fully automatic — bed levelling and flow are handled by the printer, with active flow-rate compensation during the print.
- Hotend: all-metal, up to 300 °C, with a 0.4 mm nozzle included.
- Speed: rated up to 500 mm/s — real prints run slower depending on your settings — with acceleration up to 10,000 mm/s².
- Sensors: filament run-out, power-loss recovery and tangle detection, plus a low-frame-rate 1080p camera for timelapse and remote monitoring.
- Size and weight: 5.5 kg; the printer measures 347 × 315 × 365 mm, so leave roughly 350 × 320 × 370 mm of clear desk space.
Why it's approachable for a beginner: it sets itself up, it's small and light, it has one of the larger user communities, and it's supported here with a GST invoice, stated warranty terms and WhatsApp help before and after you buy.
What it prints well — and what it doesn't
Prints well:
- PLA, PETG and Silk PLA — the everyday beginner materials. Bambu also lists TPU (flexible) and PVA (dissolvable supports) as supported for the A1 Mini; LayerHub doesn't stock those yet, so you'd source them elsewhere for now.
- Models up to 180 mm on every axis.
- Multi-colour and multi-material — but only if you add AMS Lite, which is a separate purchase.
Not the right tool for:
- ABS and ASA, polycarbonate (PC), nylon (PA), and carbon- or glass-fibre-filled composites. Bambu doesn't recommend these for this model — it's open-frame, and these materials tend to warp or need higher, steadier chamber temperatures than an open printer provides.
- Anything larger than 180 mm on any axis. Print it in parts and join them.
- Fully enclosed printing. The A1 Mini is open-frame by design.
- Buyers who need AMS Lite included in the box. It's sold separately.
None of this makes it a weak printer. It means it's a focused one: it does the beginner's 90% extremely well and is honest about the rest.
What you need to get started
In the box: the A1 Mini printer, a build plate, spool holder, purge wiper, PTFE tube, an accessory box, a sample of filament, and quick-start documentation.
You'll want soon:
- At least one full spool of filament — a 1 kg PLA is the usual first buy.
- A dry box with desiccant to keep spools from absorbing moisture.
Nice to have, not essential: spare 0.4 mm nozzles — they wear over time — a spare build plate, and basic tools, most of which come in the accessory box.
Optional upgrade: AMS Lite, for multi-colour. Add it later if you decide you want it.
You don't need: an enclosure, a ventilation setup, or paid slicer software to print PLA and PETG.

Buying a printer only makes sense if you'll use it repeatedly.
